Surfshark is the value champion, so people rarely leave over price — they leave over the renewal jump, or because they want a provider not owned by the same parent as NordVPN.
Why people look for a Surfshark alternative
Two reasons dominate: the renewal rate lands far above the intro price, and the Nord Security merger reduced the appeal for people who chose Surfshark specifically as an independent alternative.
Where Surfshark falls short
- Renewal pricing jumps sharply after the intro term
- Now part of Nord Security, which reduces the number of truly independent options
Surfshark vs the alternatives
| Platform | BP Score | From | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surfshark (current) | 4.5 | From ~$2.19/mo on 2-year plans; 30-day money-back guarantee | Families and anyone with a lot of devices | |
| Proton VPN | 4.3 | Free plan with no data cap; paid from ~$4.99/mo | Privacy-minded users and anyone who needs a real free option | Visit |
| Private Internet Access | 4.2 | From ~$2.03/mo on long plans; 30-day money-back guarantee | Tinkerers who want control and unlimited devices | Visit |
| Windscribe | 4.0 | Free 10GB/month; paid from ~$5.75/mo, or build a plan from $1/location | Light users who want to pay only for what they use | Visit |
The best alternatives, ranked
Independent, Swiss, open source and audited — with a free tier so you can verify it before paying.
Also unlimited devices, with far deeper configuration options and a no-logs record tested in court.
Build-a-Plan means you pay per location, which can undercut even Surfshark if your needs are narrow.
Stay with Surfshark if you need unlimited devices. Nothing else combines that with this price, and the speeds are perfectly good for everyday use.
